Zuburbia HOME: Chanel in Wolfe’s Clothing

chanel room by vicente wolf

Just as we I have a few favorite fashion designers, I also have a few favorite interior designers. And one name on the short list is Vicente Wolf.

The ultra-chic (and ultra-tiny) bathroom above is one of his designs that I spied in his book, Learning to See. Vicente claims it was inspired by Chanel’s packaging for Chanel No. 5 perfume and I hope it inspires you to think about how something as simple as a few yards of grosgrain ribbon could brighten up your home.

VPOD: Vintage Cole Gold Lame Swimsuit and Soul Surfer

soul surfer book

I have yet to see the movie Soul Surfer, which chronicles the true story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton, but I am so inspired by her courage and bravery.

Bethany entered her first surf competition at the age of eight. Thirteen years later, while surfing, she was attacked by a 14-ft tiger shark which bit off her left arm. Bethany battled to survive after losing 60% of her blood and underwent multiple operations.

And while most people would have given up surfing after this and considered it an end to their careers, Bethany miraculously survived, returned to her board a month later, and won her first National Title just a little over a year after her horrifying attack.

This story makes it seem a little silly to be afraid of someone noticing your not-so-perfect thighs when you wear your swimsuit, doesn’t it?

As for me, while I love being near water and around water, you’ll seldom find me in water or on water. And since I don’t enjoy swimming, diving, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, wakeboarding, parasailing, or jetskiing, I can indulge in a swimsuit that is less athletic and far more glamorous like today’s VPOD.

This vintage Cole gold lame swimsuit is designed especially for landlubbing sun bathers who prefer the sand to the waves.

And it’s a glowing find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Escada Culottes and San Diego Bay

san diego bay

Thought I’d share this beautiful view of San Diego Bay that I took from my 10th floor hotel window this morning. It’s still quite early as I write this and the marine layer hasn’t quite lifted to allow the sunshine to glisten off the water, but it’s still quite a beautiful way to wake up to the day.

And looking out at all the yachts has put me in a bit of a nautical mood, hence today’s VPOD.

These vintage culottes by Escada have sassy sailor appeal and would be fun by either the seashore or the lake.

They’re also a beautiful bayfront find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Tapouillon Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Tapestry Coat with Fur Trim

vintage 1960s tapestry coat with fox fur trim

Every time I feature a vintage fur item here on this site, it always generates controversy. And that’s to be expected since the use of fur in fashion is a very divisive issue.

And while I respect everyone’s right to an opinion, I have to believe that everyone’s email writing efforts would be better served by being less concerned about the animals that were sacrificed for fashion 50 years ago and by being more concerned about the current animal cruelty issues that exist today.

For instance, Camilla Fox, Executive Director of Project Coyote, reports on HuffPo that her organization has joined with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and the Animal Welfare Institute to file suit against the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) because they decided to waive state permit requirements and allow a controversial coyote and fox penning facility.

“Penning” allows packs of domesticated dogs into a pen to chase and kill a captive fox or coyote for sport. And that’s describing what happens mildly. Sadistic? You bet. But it’s a legal practice in at least 19 states!

If you’re outraged by the thought of this practice existing in our 2011 world, you can shout your “NO” loud and clear by commenting on the INRC’s website until May 18th.

And, as always, if I haven’t yet convinced you to forego fur in your personal fashion world, please choose a vintage item like today’s VPOD over new.

This vintage 1960s tapestry coat has plush arctic fox cuffs and collar.

And it’s a much more ethical choice for a fur-wearing vintage fashionista.

Available at Bustown Modern.
