Vintage Judith Leiber Handbag Auction at Bonhams

Like all great collections, it started with just one piece.

In this case, it was a pillbox.

But not just any pillbox. A Judith Leiber pillbox.

Bob Maier purchased it for his wife because she was “completely taken” by Judith Leiber pillboxes. And then, because it pleased her, he discovered a mission. He educated himself about Judith Leiber and her bags and continued to surprise his wife with outstanding Judith Leiber pieces on Christmas, Valentine’s Day and other occasions.

“I graduated from pillboxes to full purses quickly,” Maier says. “Each time, I got to see my wife’s face light up as a new bag she’d never seen would appear from its wrapping.”

Before long they had amassed quite a little collection!

Now this South Dakota couple is approaching retirement and they’re offering over 250 pieces from their collection at Bonham’s Entertainment Memorabilia sale on December 12.

“Don’t worry,” says Maier. “My wife is keeping a selection of her favorites, but the rest of her amazing collection we offer to you. Give them a good home, show them off, and most of all, have fun!”

I’ve shared my favorite pieces from the Maier collection with you here. Now it’s time for you to hop on over and discover your own favorite. You can view all  the lots available here.

VPOD: Vintage Flapper Heels and The Power of Practice

Lao Tzu, the Chinese philosopher who authored The Tao Te Ching, wisely reminds us that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

What he failed to mention was that the journey of a thousand miles is completed by taking that same step over and over and over and over and over and over again.

It’s this repetition, The Power of Practice, that is a primary factor separating the masters of their crafts from the mere talented.

For instance, in a pioneering study at Florida State University, psychologist K. Anders Ericsson discovered that the best violinists had accumulated 10,000 hours of practice while the good players had only accumulated 8,000 hours and the least skilled had only accumulated 5,000 hours of practice time.

Malcolm Gladwell further popularized this 10,000 Hours of Practice Rule in his book, Outliers, using the Beatles and Bill Gates as examples.

And when you think of the world’s greatest athletes, artists, writers and thought leaders, they all have put in their practice time, haven’t they? I doubt Lance Armstrong, Yo-Yo Ma, Meryl Streep and Richard Branson are the type to hit their snooze alarms three times every morning!

While talent and desire are definitely ingredients in the recipe of success, practice—and lots of it—is also critical to serving up a winning dish.

Recently, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Bo Eason, an ex-NFL star who went on to pen a critically acclaimed one-person show on Broadway.

In this semi-autobiographical story, Bo shares how he caught a football 1000 times a day, every day for twenty years!

And he admits that, as a young boy, when he’d be outside training in the morning dark with the dew still sparkling on the turf, he’d think about all the other young boys his age who wanted to play in the NFL but were still tucked away in their warm beds literally dreaming about it.

So I guess the question is this:

Are you just dreaming about your dream or are you willing to practice it?

Are you willing to devote a dedicated 10,000 hours of toil, sweat and tears to make your dream happen?

If you practice full-time, it’ll take you about five years to reach mastery. Part-time, it’ll take about 10 years. Part-part-time, putting in only an hour a day or a few hours a week, it could take the rest of your life.

And that’s okay, too. Because Masters know that mastery is a never-ending quest.  The practice never stops.

So if you want to be great, then you must commit. All it takes is that first step on your thousand mile journey. And then another and another and another…

And while today’s VPODs may not make your journey any easier, they do promise to add a touch of glamour to your step.

Any one of these four gorgeous pairs of vintage flapper shoes is a fine choice for a Master Vintage Crusader!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Knit Set and Knitffiti

vintage 1960s knit dress and coat

I’ve always loved to knit and crochet. These crafts are quite meditative, filled with repetitive motions that help calm the mind. And the tactile sensation of the yarn slipping through my fingers always serves as a reminder that time slips by just as quickly.

Yet the only completed project I can boast of is a somewhat pathetic-looking baby blanket I created almost three decades ago while I was pregnant with my daughter.

“Blankie,” as my daughter affectionately called this piece later, is now tattered and shredded and torn, its fibers literally worn away by her love and attachment. Somehow she never seemed to mind that Blankie wasn’t perfect, shaped more like a parallelogram than a square and sporting gaps where gaps were never meant to be.

Obviously, while I can string together basic stitches, my skills are minimal at best. So for me, knitting and crocheting has always been about the journey and not the destination. About the process and not the outcome.

While I’d start a project with the best of intentions, partway through I’d always end up ripping the piece apart when it stopped resembling the picture in the instructions. Still this didn’t stop me from starting each new project with enthusiasm!

And perhaps that’s why I love the idea of Knitffiti or urban knitting that is popping up all around the world. These Knitffiti artists turn their efforts to adorning light posts, parking meters, stop signs and trees with their colorful creations.

This often unexpected rejuvenation of urban landscapes is simply delightful and reminds us that it’s perfectly okay to to knit just for the sheer pleasure of it.

After all, the piece you need to fashion to brighten up the post on your porch doesn’t have to be perfect. Even an inexperienced beginner can enjoy the process of creating a simple panel to wrap around a tree in the front yard. And what a great project for kids!  Instead of creating another high score on their favorite video game, they can craft leftover lengths of yarn into an outfit for the swing set in the backyard.

So perhaps it’s time to grab a crochet hook and have some fun. Your inner child loved building culinary masterpieces with Play-Doh when you were little and molding plain ol’ bricks into medieval castles. But when was the last time you let this gal out to play?

Often when she whines for playtime, we shut her down before we can even begin to exercise our creative muscle because we’re afraid that whatever we make—a cake, a poem, a dress, a song—just won’t be good enough. Or else we admonish our inner child with a stern reminder that we just don’t have time for such nonsense.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that as you wrap your finished piece of Knitffiti around your mailbox or drape it through the trellis in your garden, both you and your inner child will both be grinning from ear to ear.

Of course, if you’re one of those super-mega-talented-artistic-types, you should probably leave the Knitffiti to us less talented beginners and channel your energies into creating something beautiful like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1960s knit dress and coat set shows just how lovely stitches and purls can be when wielded by a master.

And it’s a beautiful knitwear find for a Vintage Crusader!
