I watched Lisa Marie Presley’s interview on Oprah recently and was struck by an observation she made. Apparently she was quite taken aback when she saw one of those popular “Who Wore It Better” features in a tabloid that featured two different 3-year-old celebrity daughters.

There are so many reasons why I also find this disturbing but more importantly, I’ve never seen fashion as some sort of contest.  I’ve never felt my clothes were in competition with someone else’s. I’ve never vied for best-dressed of anything.

Instead, I’ve always viewed fashion as more of a challenge of personal discovery.

For me, fashion is an opportunity each day to create just the right mix-and-match from a closet full of options that will visually express my unique self to the world.

Of course, achieving this goal with style requires knowing quite a lot about who you are, what your preferences are, what you detest, what you adore, how you view yourself and so much more.

And it’s often an evolving picture of yourself. That’s why your closet today might look quite different than it did a decade ago.

But as you get to know yourself better and as you begin to trust yourself more, you’ll find that you are able to make better wardrobe choices. You’ll discover you’re purchasing pieces that you don’t end up hating in a few months or even a few years. You’ll discover pieces that still make you feel fabulous years later when you slip them on.

Once you’ve reached this stage of wardrobe stability, it makes even more financial sense to invest in high quality pieces that will stay with you for decades to come.

Pieces like today’s VPOD, for example. This classic 1970s top by Ossie Clark is a fine representation of his heavenly use of crepe and satin.
