vintage YSL yves saint laurent 1970s kimono jacket and skirt set

Some women are more than willing to sacrifice comfort for style. They’ll prance around for hours in their pinching high heels until their toes are numb. They’ll stuff their bodies into their Spanx and force themselves to take shallow breaths for hours on end. They’ll even endure scratchy fabrics with a smile on their faces.

And then there are the rest of us.

Those of us who believe that you can be both stylish AND comfortable.

Who believe that loose can be just as sexy as skin-tight.

Who go craaaaaaazy for a chic and comfy look like today’s VPOD.

This 1970s set from Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche features a hand-painted silk jacket with kimono sleeves and a flowing skirt all done up in fabulous neutrals and muted pinks and purples.

It’s a fabulous set for a comfort-loving vintage fashionista!

Available at Dorothea’s Closet Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Bill Gibb Kimono Knit Jacket

vintage 1970s Bill Gibb Kimono Knit Jacket 2

If you’ve been experiencing the intense heat wave creating record high temperatures this summer, probably the last thing you want to look at is anything made of heavy knit, wool, or tweed.

But global warming is not only making our hot days hotter. Oh no, no, no. While winters are becoming milder and shorter on average, we can also expect the effects of global warming to produce winter storms that will be heavier and more intense than in years gone by.

So even as you strip down to your camisole and fan yourself to stay cool this summer, it’s perfectly okay to turn your fashion thinking cap to what you’ll be wearing to stay warm come this fall and winter.

And one perfect addition to any fall wardrobe is today’s VPOD.

This knit wool kimono jacket from Bill Gibb’s 1975 Moon and Buddha collection will fit almost any size fashionista, and features a print of little buddhas and colorful moons designed by internationally renowned textile artist Kaffe Fasset.

It’s a ultra-cozy fall find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Swank Vintage.

VPOD: The Art of the Kimono

This is the final week to catch The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibition: Fashioning Kimono: Art Deco and Modernism in Japan. The exhibition features about 85 kimonos for men, women and children from the early to mid-twentieth century. And this is the first time these outstanding kimonos, from the renowned Montgomery Collection of Lugano, Switzerland, are being seen in North America.

Today’s VPOD features just one of the masterpieces from the collection. This woman’s Japanese kimono dates from the Taisho period of 1912-1926 and is an example of machine-spun silk with stencil-printed warp threads. What a beauty!

And for those of you unable to attend the exhibit, there are pictures, information and kimono history available at the exhibition’s website.

It’s a lovely way to discover the art of the kimono for a vintage fashionista!
