VPOD: Golden Gloves

Gloves are one of this season’s must-have fall accessories. They appeared on just about every fall runway and it’s not about utility–even if it doesn’t get cold enough to throw a snowball where you live, chances are you’ll see women wearing gloves in a few months! This year, besides the standard leather, velvet, or suede, we’ve seen lace, cotton, silk and sheer gloves plus bright colors, beading, feathers, and fur. It’s a glove bonanza! And you can find fabulous vintage versions of all of these pieces.

Here’s some info you might find helpful:

Glove Size: To determine your glove size, measure around the widest part of your dominant hand, excluding your thumb. The measuring tape should be sitting on top of your knuckles. Gentle bend your hand into a fist, read the measuring tape and that’s your glove size: Size 6 (XS) up to 10 (XL) (although sometimes gloves are “one size fits all” if the fabric has a lot of stretch).

Glove Length: Glove length is measured in “buttons,” derived from a French unit of measurement. “One button” equals one inch from the base of the thumb (at the wrist) to the hem of the glove. So, for instance, a six-button glove extends six inches above the wrist bone.

Today’s VPOD features a pair of hand-stitched, black suede gloves from the 1940s with gauntlet panels of black lace on gold.

They’re a magnificent fall accessory for a vintage fashionista!
