VPOD: Vintage Edwardian Crochet Jacket

Vintage Irish Crochet Sweater 1Vintage Irish Crochet Sweater Front

I suspect that I’ll never be able to enjoy a masterpiece by Pablo Picasso or Gustav Klimt or Willem de Kooning hanging on my wall. After all, these artist’s pieces are among the most expensive pieces of art ever sold (and I’m talking upwards of $130 million). But fortunately art is in the eye of the beholder. And there is art to be found in fashion, too.

Now I’m not talking about strategically torn jeans or limited edition t-shirt designs. I’m talking about the type of artistry and craft displayed in an heirloom like today’s VPOD. This Edwardian Irish crochet jacket is a true antique–over 100 years old. Just take a peek at its outstanding workmanship, condition and beauty.

It’s a stunning piece of wearable textile art for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Contentment Farm.

VPOD: Vintage Edwardian Bobbin Lace Blouse

While I’ve always concentrated on vintage clothing from mid-century, I’ve spied many an interesting earlier piece. The challenge is finding something from the early 1900s that is in wearable condition and in a size large enough to be worn. Just the other day I discovered a lovely woman’s jacket with a 21-inch waist! Even my gifted tailor’s magical fingers couldn’t make that work for me.

So you can imagine my glee over today’s VPOD. This bobbin lace blouse in cream and black has old-fashioned charm and could fit a modern woman’s body. Pair it with the vintage Yves Saint Laurent skirt shown here to create a modern, chic look.

It’s a beautiful blast from the past for a vintage fashionista!

Blouse available at Uesa Goods Vintage.
Skirt available at Zuburbia Green Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage Edwardian Vampire Chic

With the popularity of HBO’s hit show True Blood, the hysteria over the opening of the film Twilight, and The Fashion Institute of Technology’s show Gothic: Dark Glamour, it’s no surprise that vampire-inspired looks were popping up on Spring 2009 runways. What’s more surprising is how quickly this “vampire chic” trend is sweeping the country.

If you want to join in this Transylvania moment, then today’s VPOD should get your blood flowing. This vintage black silk Edwardian cape has lace panels and beadwork and plenty of that dark, brooding gothic glamour that appeals to creatures of the night.

It’s a sexy vampire find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Vintage Academe.

VPOD: Sheer Edwardian

The life of an Edwardian seamstress was one of very hard work and very long hours–particularly for the blouse makers of the era. Even though they created several masterpieces each week, these women often earned much less than standard dressmakers.

And imagine the skill required to create today’s VPOD! This early 20th century sheer Edwardian blouse is simply stunning with its ecru lace, tiny tucked netting, handmade filet lace and rose appliques. Best of all, it has survived the decades with loving care and is in fabulous condition.

It’s a true Edwardian treat for a vintage fashionista!

Available on eBay from GypsyBazaar.

VPOD: Linen & Lace

Broderie Anglaise is French for “English embroidery” and describes a needlework technique that began in England and incorporated embroidery, cutwork and needle lace in stunning displays of workmanship.

Today’s VPOD features Broderie Anglaise and other antique needlework techniques in a modern silhouette. White linen, eyelet and Irish crochet lace, all dating from around 1910, combine in an adorable summer bolero that is truly a one-of-a-kind find.

It’s an Edwardian beauty for a vintage fashionista!

Available at 1860-1960.
