VPOD: Vintage 1970s Norma Kamali Animal Print Dress and Taking a Leap

vintage 1970s norma kamali animal print dress

My sister is a fabulous nurse  — the kind you want to have at your bedside if you’re ever sick. But right now, instead of patient care, she’s locked in a mid-management position in a home-health care office tearing out her hair.

You would be, too, if you had to do reams of paperwork without a computer. That’s right. Her branch of one the largest home-heath care agencies in our country is processing their paperwork by hand.

Couple that frustration with this morning’s phone call from her 10-year-old daughter, who accidentally inserted a camera disk into their iMac’s DVD slot and then attempted to fish it out with a paperclip, and you can understand why my sis is so desperately longing to work from home.

Now mind you, she has already built a moderately successful website on home organizing. But as a divorced mom with three kids and an ex-husband who lives in another state, it’s a H-U-G-E leap of faith to quit your day job and fully embrace the entrepreneurial lifestyle.

And I can’t help but wonder how many other American women are sitting in their offices today, just like her, longing for a way out.

Ladies, I know you’re out there!

But it’s scary, right? I mean it’s SCARY!

Getting out requires not just a good business idea, the proper skills and a hefty slush fund but immense courage and, ultimately, a leap of faith.

And it’s that leap of faith that gets you every time.

Sure you may hate your job. You have a great idea. You want to serve the world in a new way. You feel confident your business will succeed. You’re willing to work long and hard at it. You’ve weighed the pros and cons. You know you should leap…

…but instead you get up the next day and go right back to that job you hate.

And while others may say that it’s fear of failure that keeps you on the precipice, I disagree.

It’s not fear of failure. It’s fear of humiliation.

We can accept failure. Failure is just a teacher. Something didn’t work out and you learned from it. There’s no shame in that.

What you’re really afraid of is facing all the people who doubted you from the beginning and hearing their spoken or unspoken “I told you so’s.”

But as someone who finally made the leap from a job with a Fortune 500 company to the freelance life I enjoy today, I can tell you that humiliation turns to joy very quickly when you are doing something you love that inspires you.

When your vision of you and what you want to accomplish is big enough, you will gladly accept all the humiliation the world can dish out. You will fail. You will hear the “I told you so’s.” Then you will dust yourself off and do it again, over and over, until your vision becomes a reality.

And I firmly believe that the world needs women willing to risk humiliation.

The world needs YOU!

It needs intelligent, thoughtful, caring, visionary women to help lead it to a better place.

Whether you choose to do that in your own company or by working for someone else, please don’t ever let the thought of being humiliated stop you from sharing your brilliant idea or venturing out on your own.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Tiger Print Jersey Set

vintage 1970s tiger print maxi and jacket

A hundred years ago, about 100,000 tigers roamed freely through India’s forests. This year’s latest census counts only 1,706 of the beautiful beasts.

Yikes!

This shockingly low number reflects the wild cats’ shrinking habitat due to power projects, mining and roads all encroaching on what was once wild forest. It also reflects the result of illegal poaching and highlights the world’s continued desire for tiger pelts and body parts.

But this number is also a reason to have hope because the current census counts about 300 more tigers in the wild than just four years ago. And that means that conservation efforts are having an effect.

As you know, Zuburbia donates 10% of all fur, feather and reptile sales to an animal activist charity and just yesterday I made 2010’s donation to WildAid, whose mission is to end illegal wildlife trade in our lifetimes. In other words, they want to make sure that your grandchildren and your great-grandchildren will still live in a world where tigers roam free.

Why did I choose WildAid? Because unlike many charities, this organization has a “100% to the field” guarantee that promises to channel my donation directly to the field and offers transparent accounting to back up this claim.

My hope is that by supporting the work of organizations like WildAid, tiger pelts will stay where they belong — on the backs of living, breathing tigers. And surely we can all live with that, can’t we?

After all, if we need a tiger fix, we can always scout out a fine little find like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1970s jersey maxi gown and coat set can bring a little sense of the jungle to any party.

It’s quite the wild find for a vintage fashionista!

Zuburbia VPOW: Vintage 1960s Aquanala Animal Print Coat

Mixing prints is a definite skill–both in home decor and in fashion. Some folks are naturally talented and create genius combinations and others, well, let’s just say they struggle and often come up short. And when it comes to mixing animal prints, in particular, less is most definitely more. Anyone gutsy enough to mix leopard, zebra, giraffe or other animal prints together is probably a hard-core professional.

Yet, while mixing animal prints is a general no-no, today’s VPOW breaks all the rules. This luxurious 1960s coat by Aquanala evokes the spirit of multiple animal prints without paying homage to any one of them. The colors and patterns don’t identify a particular species but instead create an overall impression that says “animal print” without actually being an animal print.

And that makes for a fabulous find for a vintage fashionista!

Zuburbia VPOW: Vintage A.J. Bari On the Prowl Leopard Print Cocktail Dress

A friend was recently showing me his Halloween costume for this year which included garish iridescent platform shoes and a purple only-to-be-worn on Halloween polyester shirt.

But for green vintage fashionistas, these types of costumes just won’t do! Instead of spending way too many dollars on a costume you’ll wear only once and then donate to a thrift store, use this as an opportunity to score a fabulous little outfit that you’ll actually be proud to wear in public when Halloween is over.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. Go prowling on Halloween in this 1990s vintage A.J. Bari strapless leopard-print mini dress by adding a fabulous cat’s-eye mask and long black-painted fingernails for claws. Then drag it out without those holiday additions for a dinner date a month from now.

It’s quite a versatile find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Zuburbia.
