VPOD: Vintage 1940s Wool Felt Hat

vintage 1940s wool felt hat

Moira McDonald, Seattle Times Movie Critic, recently interviewed Jenny Beavan, costume designer for The King’s Speech and nine-time Academy Award nominee. In the interview, Beavan shared many insights into the use of vintage clothing in films, but I was most struck by her comments about how hats extended the film’s limited budget. She said:

“We couldn’t afford huge amounts of different outfits, but changing the hat changed the look.”

Which made me wonder whatever happened to women wearing hats anyway? Not utilitarian, keep-you-warm kind of hats. I’m talking about the dazzling, smashing, sophisticated, talk-of-the-town hats that were once all the rage.

You’d think an accessory this powerful would have had a longer shelf life in fashion!

While you can still spy some amazing hat creations on the runways or adorning the occasional celebrity, it seems that American women, for the most part, have abandoned the tradition of leaving the house with a hat on.

Perhaps the lovely Kate Middleton, who announced this week that the Irish milliner Philip Treacy will be designing hats for her wedding party, will be the gal who re-ignites a hat frenzy.

Until then, there are plenty of interesting and fashionable vintage hats to be had and you can use them to stretch your wardrobe budget just like Jenny Beaven used them to stretch hers on A King’s Speech.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This vintage 1940s felted wool creation can help transform a ho-hum contemporary black dress or suit into something simply marvelous and very fashion-forward.

It’s a heady find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Felt Hat

vintage 1970s felt hat

Oh, to have a hat head!

You know what I mean—the right size, the right shape, the right hair to match. My daughter has one. Put any hat on her head and it looks like a million bucks. Put most hats on my head and I disappear—literally! They cover my eyes and rest on my nose.

And that’s a shame because there’s no quicker and easier way to inject some pizazz into your ol’ winter coat mid-season than to pop on a fresh, new hat like today’s VPOD.

This vintage felted version from the 1970s is bursting with color in an energetic print that will breathe life and style into your red trench, your grey bolero or your go-to black wool coat.

It’s a bright fun find for a vintage fashionista!

Lovin’ It: Recycled Fortune Cookie Coin Purses

recycled fortune cookie coin purse

I’m lovin’ these recycled scrap leather coin purses designed in the shape of fortune cookies by New York designer Diane Eng. And yes, they come with your very own fortune tucked inside!

What’s more interesting, though, is that each purse has a unique laser etched ID number which allows you to track its origin as remnant leather from the garment district, for instance, or as rescued upholstery samples or preconsumer scraps.

They’re a fun little find for eco-conscious vintage fashionistas!

Price: $45 | Available at Diane Eng.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Op Art Handkerchief

I’m a big fan of Julia Cameron and The Artist’s Way. She recommends two pivotal tools to foster creativity: Morning Pages, which are three pages written long-hand every morning upon waking, and Artist Dates, weekly “play dates” that you plan for yourself.

Yesterday, my weekly Artist Date to me to a local auction. What fun! It’s such a lesson in human psychology to watch people’s behavior at auction. On a microcosmic level it reflects the same feeding frenzy that we see in the stock market and the marketplace.

Whether you go to live auctions or just play on eBay, the most important rule for successful auctions is to Know Your Maximum Bid. Set this maximum bid while you’re level-headed, before the bidding begins. And stick to it!

Of course, this means you will lose occasionally. For instance, yesterday I just missed out on the grey version of a vintage 1970s Vasarely lithograph like the one shown above. I really wanted this little guy and I knew just where I’d hang him on my wall. But alas, even though this piece went off waaaaay below market value, I drove home empty-handed because the winning bid was still slightly higher than my pre-set maximum bid.

So while I was disappointed, I was also proud that I had stuck to my guns. Believe me, it can take quite some time and a whole lot of dollars to develop this discipline!

And I’ve learned not to cry over lost auctions. With the creativity fostered by Julia Cameron’s Artist Dates, your creative self will always find an alternative.

Like today’s VPOD, for instance.  Until another Vasarely comes my way, I can frame this fantastic, unused vintage op art handkerchief and get the same vibe for thousands of dollars less.

It’s quite an artistic find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Decades of Baltimore.

VPOD: Vintage Judith Leiber Crystal Handbag

VIntage Judith Leiber Crystal Handbag

Judith Leiber Vintage Crystal Handbag

In a little while, after the worst of the rush hour traffic is over, I’ll be heading out to inspect some Judith Leiber handbags at an auction preview. As part of my due diligence and pre-auction research, I’ve been Googling to find every vintage Judith Leiber handbag hiding in cyberspace—and there are quite a few out there!

Of course, with their quality and craftsmanship, it’s easy to understand why Judith Leiber bags are such perennial favorites. And I’m not ashamed to admit that I love my early Leiber gold lion minaudiere so much that I keep it on display on my dressing table!

And I think it’s time that more of Judith Leiber’s evening bags see the light of day.

Take today’s VPOD, for instance.

This pre-1990s bag is certainly elegant when the lights are dim but it deserves to have sunshine reflecting off those crystals, too. Like when it’s worn with a classy suit at an elegant lunch perhaps. Or when it’s playfully worn cross-body style for a trek through city streets.

After all, if the fashion police haven’t arrested any gals wearing beaded and sequined UGGs during the day, then surely we can all tolerate a little Judith Leiber eye candy too!

Like this delicious find for a vintage fashionista!
