VPOD: Vintage 1990s Moschino Fruit Print Dress

vintage moschino fruit print dress

Way back in 1931, Lew Brown and Ray Henderson wrote a song called “Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries” with lyrics that preached:

Life is just a bowl of cherries
Don’t make it serious.
Life’s too mysterious.

But there’s no denying that there are some serious things happening in our world right now!

From uprisings on the other side of the globe to devastating storm destruction here at home, sometimes life seems nothing like a bowl of cherries. And one might wonder if there’s any underlying meaning behind it all (although I’d like to point out that the End of the World didn’t exactly happen at the date and time predicted last week).

But the lyrics also remind us:

The sweet things in life
To you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?

Small consolation to those good folks grieving over their losses from the mighty tornadoes. But a good lesson for those of us waking up today with roofs over our heads.

Maybe we should all try thinking of ourselves not as the owners of anything, but as stewards of everything!

Can you imagine the mindshift this might cause?

You would realize that anything and everything has only been placed in your care for a limited amount of time. It would change how you handle objects and how you treat people. And it would help you understand that even the little things — like turning off the water when you brush your teeth, for instance — can and does make a difference in the world.

But good ol’ Lew Brown and Ray Henderson weren’t done yet. They still had one more observation to share:

You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.

Which means that each of us should enjoy every day, every moment, every item to its fullest while we have the opportunity, and that includes today’s VPOD.

Fashion often takes its cues from interior design (and vice versa) and right now fruit prints are everywhere — on sheets, wallpaper, and all types of housewares. They’ve also cropped up in fashion which is serving a veritable fruit salad of delights from the likes of Prada and Stella McCartney.

Grab your own juicy fun with this vintage 1990s dress by Moschino that combines whimsical polka dots with bold fruit appliques of watermelon, cherries, lemon and orange.

It’s a sweet summer find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1990s Donna Karan Cashmere Evening Gown

vintage 1990s donna karan cashmere evening gown

I’ve always been a huge Donna Karan fan and her philosophy to dress in only the highest quality items that make you utterly happy. Here is a woman who understands women and the many roles we play as mothers, friends, lovers, businesspeople and more, and who always manages to express that intimate understanding in her clothing designs.

Now, Donna Karan has taken on an even more important role with her passion project, The Urban Zen Foundation. It’s mission? “To raise awareness and inspire change in the areas of well-being, preserving culture and empowering children.”

As if I needed any more reasons to fall in love with Donna Karan and her designs! Like today’s VPOD, for instance.

This vintage 1990s cashmere evening gown is a rare piece designed by Maeve Carr for Donna Karan. First, the good news. It was previously owned and worn by Barbra Streisand! Now, the bad news. It has two small moth holes that will need to be mended.

Such a small price to pay for a Donna Karan-lovin’ vintage fashionista!

Available at Antique Dress. | Discovered at TheFind.com.

VPOD: Vintage Givenchy Croquis Fashion Sketches

vintage givenchy croquis fashion illustrations

Do you ever dream of a world where you open your closet and all of your ready-to-wear clothes have been replaced by haute couture designs made especially for you?

Sure it’s a fantasy. After all, one haute couture gown might cost more than all the current clothes hanging in your closet combined. But there’s nothing to stop a girl from dreaming.

And if you’d like to take an interim step between your reality and your fantasy, you might want to consider treating yourself to one of today’s VPODs.

These vintage fashion sketches, or croquis, were all designed by Givenchy between 1980 and 1995 and include fabric swatches and design numbers. Originally given to a limited number of Givenchy clients at the Paris couture shows, these lovely sketches are now available to any gal who would like to frame them and gaze lovingly upon them daily.

They’re dreamy finds for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Katy Kane.

VPOD: Vintage North Beach Military Jacket and Military Families Week

vintage 1980s north beach leather military jacket

Back in the seventh grade, I remember being the only person in my class who could correctly spell and define epaulettes. I remember this so clearly because it was the same day that W.B. first noticed me and spontaneously invited me to the Spring Dance.

And while you’d think that a girl who knew her epaulettes would somehow recognize that a career in fashion was in her future, this girl somehow ended up taking a decade-long detour as a CPA!

How could that happen, you wonder?

Well, I blame it on W.B.! His raging male pheromones kept wafting in my direction somehow boggling my brain into thinking CPA instead of FIT.

Lucky for all of us, though, W.B. felt no such distractions from my own feminine wiles. He was hell-bent on becoming an Air Force pilot and today this genius lad is a Colonel developing military strategy with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

And let me tell you, we can all sleep a little easier at night knowing someone of his caliber is willing to devote his life’s work to keeping American safe.

Now I haven’t seen W.B. since graduation, but I hear he has a lovely family of his own. That’s why I was thrilled to learn that today Michelle Obama and Jill Biden will announce a new program called Joining Forces to focus attention on the needs of military families.

To support their effort, The AOL Huffington Post Media Group is declaring this Military Families week. They’ll be running lots of stories to honor and assist military families but while sections like Education, Living, Tech and Health were participating, I saw no mention of the Style section joining the fun.

So since I stand in awe, with both honor and humility, before the men and women who sacrifice so much (voluntarily!) in service to our country, let me take this opportunity to mention some of the non-profits that make it easy for each of us to give back and support our military families. I’m talking about programs like Cell Phones for Soldiers, Operation Shower, Hire Heroes USA, and Wounded Warriors.

And while I feel strongly that we should all show respect and honor to our men and women in uniform, and give them support however we are able, after doing so you may be inspired to adopt a stylish military look all your own.

So take a look at today’s VPOD.

This vintage North Beach Leather military-style jacket is new old stock and gives the traditional military look a twist with bright green suede.

It’s a military marvel for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Bustown Modern.
