VPOD: First Lady of Fashion

You thought it was tough figuring out what to wear to your company holiday party? How about figuring out what to wear to your husband’s inauguration as President of the United States? Now there’s a fashion dilemma!

One First Lady, Nancy Reagan, was able to hold her own through the inauguration and other important events like visits to the Soviet Union during the Cold War and the wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana. She had a simple and elegant style and even won a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1988.

This past weekend, Nancy Reagan — A First Lady’s Style, a wonderful retrospective exhibit of her wardrobe, opened at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley. The year-long show features 80 looks arranged chronologically, from her wedding suit to the suit she wore to her husband’s funeral. Designs by Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass, Galanos, Carolina Herrera, Adolfo, Yves St. Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, and Chanel are featured as well as the gowns by Valentino shown here.

It’s an afternoon delight for a vintage fashionista!
