VPOD: Vintage Evening Gowns – Name The Designer

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast on NBC live this Sunday from the Beverly Hilton Hotel and certainly half the fun for fashionistas is watching the Red Carpet arrivals.

Of course, I’m always disappointed that more Hollywood leading ladies aren’t able to answer the question, “Who are you wearing?” with a proud vintage shout-out.

After all, these celebrities have the means and ability to select from a host of amazing vintage evening gowns like today’s VPODs. These three award-worthy gowns are from Halston, Valentino and Bob Mackie, though not necessarily in this order.

Can you guess which gown is from which designer?

It’s a little game I like to play when I’m watching the Red Carpet arrivals at Awards Shows and you can practice right now with these three beauties.*

And even if you can’t match the correct designer with his chiffon, beads or satin bow, you must admit these would all be fine award night choices for a celebrity vintage fashionista!

Available at TheFrock.com.

Gift Wrap Idea for Vintage Jewelry

pearls in book from town & country magazine

I spied this super clever and oh-so-lovely presentation of a pearl necklace in an issue of Town & Country magazine and thought it was a great idea for gift-wrapping vintage jewelry presents.

A hidden compartment was carefully carved into a vintage dictionary and the pearl necklace was nestled inside. But you can make your gift even more personal by seeking out a vintage book title that has special meaning to the recipient or that complements your gift item.

For instance, you could gift a vintage bird brooch inside a book about birds. Just be sure not to destroy a valuable first edition!

It’s a fun gift wrap idea for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Little Black Dress – An Essential Wardrobe Piece for Rachel Bilson

vintage little black dress

In addition to wearing her actress cap, Rachel Bilson turns out a monthly fashion Q&A column for Instyle magazine. In November, she was asked a tough question:

“If your wardrobe could consist of only five pieces (no limit to the number of accessories), what would they be?”

And while the thought of only five wardrobe pieces certainly seems limiting, I thought she compiled a quite excellent list:

1. A flattering pair of jeans
2. A basic white T
3. A neutral sweater
4. A blazer
5. A black dress

And certainly, I wouldn’t think of shopping for item #5 anywhere but a vintage shop. With so many fabulous vintage little black dresses out there just waiting for new homes, why go anywhere else?

Today’s VPOD is just one fine specimen waiting for adoption. This lovely frock is very good at hiding her age, dating from somewhere in the 1950s or 1960s. But she doesn’t hide her style with sexy V’s both front and back and a prominent bead and rhinestone collar.

It’s a lovely wardrobe essential for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Strapless Sundress

Think a sundress is just for summer?

Think again!

When a sundress is as sophisticated as this beauty, you’re perfectly sane to want to wear it year round. And all it takes is a bit of styling flair.

Sure this 1950s cotton dress has an organic country print of wheat and daffodils but the color scheme of navy and gold makes it easy to dress it up and take it out to the big city. Just add a cashmere cardigan or a faux fur shrug. Or try it with tights until the thermometer gives you permission to switch to bare legs and sandals.

It’s a year-round beauty for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Daisy Dress

vintage 1960s daisy dress

I was driving to one of my favorite designer resale shops on Saturday when NPR’s regular programming was interrupted with breaking news of the tragic shooting in Arizona.

And while the press seems to be focused primarily on the anger and hate that may have contributed to the shooting, I think far more attention should be paid to the bravery and heroism displayed that day.

Hopefully many Americans will see this event as a Call to Action for them, for as Bill Clinton said after the Oklahoma City bombing:

“When there is talk of hatred, let us stand up and talk against it. When there is talk of violence, let us stand up and talk against it.”

And there’s no better way to stand up for your country and talk against violence and hatred than in good ol’ red, white and blue.

Today’s VPOD features a vintage 1960s daisy dress in just those patriotic hues.

It’s an eye-catching find for an American vintage fashionista!

Available at Borough Vintage.
