VPOD: Vintage Ralph Lauren Evening Gown

Kudos to the 2011 SAG awards which saved THREE TONS of paper this year by encouraging its members to cast their votes online. But that’s just the tip of the green iceberg.

This zero-waste event wined and dined its guests with locally sourced food and used eco-friendly plates, cups and utensils that were recycled at the night’s end. In addition, Hollywood’s talent were offered hybrid cars for transportation and the event was even prepared for an emergency power interruption with a backup biodeisel generator.

Plus it was so nice to see a few celebrities embracing the SAG Awards’ green spirit and donning vintage evening wear for their walk down the Red Carpet.

Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) looked totally glam in her elegant vintage Thierry Mugler gown and Dianna Agron (Glee) glowed in her vintage Chanel cocktail dress.

And if any invitees to the upcoming Oscars are still tearing out their hair trying to decide what to wear, I offer today’s VPOD. This strapless vintage Ralph Lauren evening gown is ready and waiting to strut its stuff.

It’s an eco-friendly award night find for a vintage fashionista!

Today marks two and a half decades since the catastrophic explosion aboard the Challenger space shuttle and, for many of us, it’s one of those moments that imprinted itself so strongly on our memories that we will always remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we witnessed the disaster or heard the horrific news.

Yesterday, Steven J. McAuliffe, widower of Christa McAuliffe, the teacher who was killed onboard Challenger that day, reminded us of what he thought Christa would say is the Challenger’s most precious lesson:

that “ordinary people can make extraordinary contributions when they remain true to themselves and enthusiastically pursue their own dreams wherever they may lead.”

Let’s keep the families of all of our nation’s brave astronauts in our thoughts today. And remember to reach for your own stars, too.

If you need a little help, turn to today’s VPOD. This vintage 1970s silk blouse by Ungaro pairs hearts and stars for an inspiring chic print.

It’s a star-gazing find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Kate Spade Barbie Doll

vintage 2003 kate spade barbie doll

Today is my last day at Arizona State University and so I think it’s fitting to devote today’s VPOD to the designer Kate Spade, one of ASU’s most famous graduates.

A journalism major, Kate began her fashion career in the accessories department at Mademoiselle where she became inspired to start her own line of handbags. But handbags were just the beginning! The Kate Spade brand has since grown to include stationery, shoes, clothing, bedding, perfume, wallpaper and more.

And while her early vintage-inspired bags are sure to be on vintage fashionista hotlists in years to come, today’s VPOD is bound to be highly collectible as well.

This Kate Spade limited edition Barbie was issued in 2003 and reflects Kate’s personal style with both a miniature wicker Kate Spade handbag and a Kate Spade-labeled canvas tote to house an adorable pup.

It’s a future fashion collectible for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Broadline Dolls.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Vested Gentress Dress

vintage vested gentress pink snail dress

The Huffington Post reported this week that giant snails are being used by Russian scientists to monitor air pollution being emitted from a sewage incinerator. That’s right, scientists have strapped heart monitors onto a species of snails that have lungs and breathe just as we humans do. As if we don’t already know that pollution causes all sorts of health issues!

It seems to me that scientists would be better served working on solving out pollution problems instead of measuring its effects on innocent snails. Especially when you consider that snails evolved more than 600 million years ago and are still thriving despite mankind’s continuing efforts to destroy our environment.

Why a few of them even managed to maneuver their way into today’s VPOD!

This vintage 1960s Vested Gentress dress is simply darling and is you look closely, you’ll see quite a few cleverly disguised snails inching their way through the print.

It’s a charming springtime find for a vintage fashionista!
