Last week, Tina Fey became the third woman awarded the coveted Mark Twain Prize for Humor. And I was struck by a comment she made in her acceptance speech:

“I hope that women are achieving at a rate these days that we can stop counting the number they are at things.”

Amen to that!

Being “among the first” to do something significant or to be awarded a high honor should be considered an achievement because of the work performed, not because of a person’s age, sex or skin color.

Stephen Burrows, for instance, was among the first African American designers to achieve status in the fashion industry and win a coveted Coty Award. And while he is honored for these achievements, his true achievement lies in the fabulous body of work he produced, a body of work that produced pieces like today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1960s chiffon poncho features his signature lettuce edging and makes a perfect partner for the leggings that are so trendy right now. (And ladies, take advantage, because by the time leggings go “out” and recycle back around to being “in” again, you may not want them anywhere near your decades older legs!)

This is truly a poncho with punch for a vintage fashionista!
