Do you have voices in your head?  You know, the ones that try to talk you out of purchases?

You spy something that tugs at your heart strings like today’s VPOD, a fab velvet bolero jacket by Pucci. You see it and you immediately love it. But then, before you can click the purchase button, those voices inside your head start screaming:

“Velvet? What are you doing! You don’t buy velvet in May! You need to be shopping for a swimsuit!”

or

“A bolero? What are you thinking! Nobody showed boleros for fall. Everyone will be wearing boyfriend blazers and you’ll look like a fool!”

Are you going crazy? Definitely not!

After talking to tons of women, I’m convinced that we all have these voices inside our heads who just love to criticize our fashion choices. And if you let them, they will very frequently talk you out of some of the best fashion purchases you could ever make. In fact, the next time you notice these voices beginning their conversation, listen very closely and you’ll often find that they sound a lot like people in your past who just loved to put you down: here’s mom, or your bratty younger sister, or that girl at school who thought she was so super cool.

But somewhere in that crowd of voices is the one true voice of you. And those lucky gals that are able to single it out and put the other voices on mute are usually the ones that we end up admiring for their sense of style. Whoever’s on your personal best-dressed list—Kate Moss, the Olsen twins, Carla Bruni, Queen Rania al Abdullah, Blake Lively, Barbara Walters, Penelope Cruz—these women found a way to pay attention to their one true fashion voice.

That’s the voice that says things like:

“Velvet! You love velvet and this is going to feel so luxurious come fall. I know you’re shopping for a swimsuit but they’ll all be on sale in a few weeks anyway. Get one then.”

or

“How great will this be with those skinny jeans you love! No one else will have one like it and you’ll feel great every time you wear it!”

Find your true empowering fashion voice, learn to trust it, and it won’t steer you wrong.
