Python. Anaconda. Cobra. While many fashionistas wouldn’t get within a few feet of a live snake, they’re perfectly happy to carry a snakeskin handbag. In fact, exotic snakeskin accessories have seen a recent surge in popularity, particularly in Europe.

But few consumers seem to be aware of the environmental toll of their fashion fix. There are growing concerns, for instance, that this fashion obsession is wreaking havoc on the populations of the most popular species of snakes as well as affecting the eco-systems of their natural habitats. And recent tales of the brutal, barbaric, and cruel slaughtering of these amazing reptiles are horrific. So, if you must get your reptile fix–and you’re not yet ready to swear off reptile skins entirely–why not carry a vintage bag instead?
