VPOD: Flapper Fashion

“Women have highly resolved that they are just as good as men, and intend to be treated so. They don’t mean to have any more unwanted children. They don’t intend to be debarred from any profession or occupation which they choose to enter. They clearly mean (even though not all of them yet realize it) that in the great game of sexual selection they shall no longer be forced to play the role, simulated or real, of helpless quarry.”

This quote is from an article by Bruce Bliven entitled “Flapper Jane” that first appeared in The New Republic way back in 1925. He was speaking, of course, about “flappers,” the rebels of their day. These were women who cut their hair, wore makeup, showed their knees, listened to jazz and ignored the conventional social and sexual norms. In many ways, flappers paved the way for all of the liberties that we modern women take for granted.

Of course, the flappers left something else behind–beautiful dresses like today’s VPOD. This beautiful flapper dress from the 1920s is an exquisite example of the style of the era with its beautiful multi-colored beading and sequin detail.

It’s a beautiful piece of history for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Isadora’s.
