VPOD: Vintage Hermes Golf Scarf

You know that feeling you get when you’re cleaning out your closet and you know you should get rid of something but you’re afraid that you just might need it one day?

Well, I have that same feeling with paper and information.

I admit it. I’m a Clippaholic.

I save snippets of text, quotes, pictures, ads, articles, recipes. You name it. I save it.

But until this past year I had no easy way of organizing and retrieving all this good stuff when I actually needed it. While I had good intentions to rip or clip and then neatly keep things in organized files, the end result was more like disorganized piles. I’m spent many an hour in retrieval mode mumbling “I know it’s here somewhere!”

Then I met my new best friend, Evernote.

This handy-dandy guy goes everywhere with me since he hangs out on my desktop, my laptop and in an app on my iPhone. And he helps me to remember EVERYTHING.

I just give Evernote a to-do, or scan him a magazine clipping, or ask him to remember a webpage, or print him an online receipt, or feed him that note I scribbled on the back of a napkin — anything really since there seems to be nothing he can’t remember!

Evernote gobbles them all up and then crosses-his-heart-and-hopes-to-die PROMISES that he’ll easily help me find whatever I need later when I actually need it.

And this guy Evernote is a search maniac. While he certainly likes it when I take the time to tag the stuff I’m asking him to remember, he can get the job done even when I don’t. In fact, if I treat him right he’ll even work his magic so I can find my search term in an image file!

That’s how I happened upon this Hermes ad I had passed off to Evernote somewhere in the distant past. Evernote caught that “Hermes” up on the corner of the page and he graciously (and quickly) served up the inspiration for today’s VPOD.

Now a quick glance at this ad and you’ll want to a) grow your hair long so you can wear a braided pigtail again, b) start planning a vacation to St. Bart’s or c) Google “vintage hermes scarf” so you can recreate your own version of this summer fun.

I chose Option C and my Googling quickly turned up today’s VPOD.

This vintage Hermes beauty hails from the late 70s-early 80s and features a golf motif in shocking pinks. You can choose to tie it in your hair. Or wrap it around your neck, wrist or waist. Or dangle it from a golf bag.

Any one would be a fine choice for a vintage fashionista!

P.S. This isn’t a paid endorsement for Evernote. I’m just thrilled with how this application how streamlined my life and wanted to share. Check it out if you’re drowning in paper. It’s a lifesaver.

VPOD: Vintage Art Deco Plastic and Metal Belt and Thoughts on Style

vintage art deco plastic and metal belt 2

vintage art deco plastic and metal belt

So when you hear the word STYLE do you think of a noun or a verb?

Because, interestingly, style refers to both, right?

I mean, there’s style as in “She’s got style” and there’s style as in “Who will Rachel Zoe style for the Oscars?”

So style is both something you possess and the process you go through to get it.

Sounds a little chicken and egg to me.

I mean, what comes first?  Is anyone really born with style?

Does anyone come out of the womb automatically knowing how to match prints or instinctively put together disparate pieces in a way that creates a cohesive organized look all their own?

Uh-uh.

I believe you learn the process of style over time by paging through years of fashion magazines, by paying attention to men and women who catch your eye and letting their style sense infuse you, by developing your own eye for good design aesthetics, and by trying, testing, combining, re-combining, experimenting, and yes, sometimes even failing, until eventually you earn the moniker stylish.

I read an article about famed designer Marcel Wanders recently. In it, he told the story of how he used to put a blanket down in the middle of his room and just put things on it, trying to create a harmonious arrangement of objects.

He did this two or three hours a day for about nine months!

No one ever saw him do it. He never shared these compositions. But he now admits that this was one of the ways he studied to become a great designer.

So I guess what I’m saying is that I believe you have to get through the verb style before you can arrive at the noun style.

You may need to try on different personas, test out different looks, experiment and perhaps even shock a few people before you can easily settle into the style that is authentically you.

And to do all this styling, you’re gonna need a few accessories.

Jewelry, scarves, hats and belts are the finishing touches that allow you to pepper each and every outfit with the authentic style you worked so hard to cultivate. So take a look at today’s VPOD.

This vintage art deco belt features decorative floral metal pieces overlaid on plastic.

And it’s a perfect style find for a vintage fashionista.

VPOD: Vintage Beetle Charm with the Beatles Inside!

vintage beetle charm closed

vintage beetle charm with beatles inside

Do you like surprises?

Not the kind that leave you reeling but the kind that make you squeal with delight?

Things like secret compartments, hidden pockets, or pieces that can do double duty — say presto-change from a watch into a bracelet or some other marvelous feat.

If so, you’re sure to be charmed by today’s VPOD.

This delightful piece of memorabilia from 1963 features a rather ordinary beetle charm that opens to reveal…the Beatles!

Obviously playing off the homophone of beetle/Beatle, inside you’ll find the whole gang of John, Paul, George and Ringo along with an inscribed “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.”

And while this poor little beetle does happen to be missing the tip of one of his legs, I suspect that won’t be a deterrent for true Beatles fans or for gals who may harbor a still-secret crush on this ultimate boy band.

Yes, this is a super-charming find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage YSL Statement Necklace and Understanding Jewellery

vintage ysl carnelian and agate necklace

I’ve recently been spending my evenings with David Bennett’s and Daniela Mascetti’s irresistible tome, Understanding Jewellery. It’s 496 pages of pure jewelery delight written by two Sotheby’s experts and filled with 919 of the most drool-worthy pictures of jewelry you’ll find anywhere.

And get this: each image has been taken to show the piece of jewelry at its actual size. Now THAT is what I call attention to detail!

This reference work for dealers and collectors worldwide is like a crash-course on gemstones, explaining where they come from, testing methods to identify precious from semi-precious stones and tips for assessing quality and detecting fakes. Then it takes us on a trip through jewelry history from the late 18th century right through the end of the millennium.

People often ask me how to develop their “eye” for quality vintage pieces. I truly believe that poring over reference books like this one, which highlights some of the finest jewelery pieces ever handled by Sotheby’s, is a sure-fire way to hone your style-detecting muscles.

While the cost of these pieces puts them out of reach for most collectors, studying them and ingraining their qualities into your own style DNA will help you make better selections among the pieces you CAN afford to add to your collection.

And, of course, you need not always purchase pieces with actual gemstones.

While I adore the elegant and sparkly genuine gemstones that adorn the pieces depicted in this book, I much prefer to wear costume treasures like today’s VPOD.

This vintage statement necklace by Yves Saint Laurent features synthetic carnelian and faux banded agate. Sure, it’s still not cheap, but it packs a way bigger style punch than ten less expensive necklaces combined.

And that makes it a simple choice for a vintage fashionista!
