VPOD: Vintage 1950s Pretty as a Princess Gown

The one day every woman wants to feel like a princess is on her wedding day and yet what is the traditional color for a wedding gown? White! The least flattering shade for most women. So I am pleased to see the recent trend toward color for brides. But I think the daring fashionista can go ever futher.

For instance, I think today’s VPOD would be a perfect choice for a garden wedding or for a bride who’s renewing her vows and doesn’t want to walk down the aisle wearing traditional white. This vintage 1950s beauty is a true showstopper! And it’s colorful ruched bodice, layers of tulle and floral appliques are guaranteed to elict all the ooh’s and aah’s a bride could ever hope for.

It’s a find as pretty as a princess for a vintage fashionista!

Available on eBay.

VPOD: Vintage 1940s Wedding Bells Are Ringing Gown

While it’s been a long tradition to wear something old, new, borrowed and blue on your wedding day, it’s suddenly become hip to have that something old be your wedding gown. With the huge trend in green weddings, the demand for vintage wedding gowns is growing rapidly. But finding the perfect vintage dressing gown can be a challenge. So here are a few tips:

1. Know your budget before you start shopping.

Buying a vintage wedding gown often means that you’ll be able to purchase higher quality for a lower price, but it doesn’t mean cheap. Today’s VPOD, for example, is almost $6,000! Set your budget before you start shopping and then stick to it, remembering to also factor in any alterations and repairs.

2. Fabric deteriorates over time so choose your dress wisely.

That 1920s flapper dress that looks so stunning on the hangar in a thrift shop could be a tattered mess by time you get down the aisle. Unless you’re a veteran vintage shopper and able to spot the tell-tale signs of fabric damage, limit your shopping to reputable vintage stores.

3. Know your measurements.

Forget about sizes when you shop. Since most wedding gowns are altered to fit the bride, the size on a tag will often have no correlation with the actual bust, waist and hip measurements. Remember, too, that if you plan to wear a girdle or corset, they’ll reduce your own measurements from what you usually use for sizing.

4. Find a good seamstress.

It’s usually better to buy a gown that’s bigger and alter it down to fit. Letting out gowns is usually more difficult and you may find that any seam allowances in vintage gowns are a different color. Also keep in mind that while minor repairs like replacing buttons are easy, more difficult repairs, like changing necklines or adding embellishments to hide tears, should only be handled by a true pro and can seriously add to your costs.

5. Embrace online shopping.

Most brides don’t dream of shopping for their wedding gown in cyberspace but that’s where most vintage wedding gowns are available. Be sure you know the exchange policy and call to have all of your questions answered before ordering.

Your wedding gown is often one of the most expensive clothing purchases of your life. And whether you spend $300, $3,000 or $30,000, you just want to look and feel fabulous.

Today’s VPOD features a pleated and ruffled gauze wedding gown from the mid-1940s that has the quality and design to rival any contemporary couture gown.

And it’s just one fabulous wedding day choice for a vintage fashionista!

Available at TheFrock.com.

VPOD: VIntage Sapphire Evening Gown

I was planning to feature a vintage wedding gown as today’s VPOD but then I spied this gorgeous sapphire blue gown and thought, “Why not?” Since I’m not a very traditional gal and I look just awful in white, I wouldn’t wear a white wedding gown if I ever got married anyway. And as for that whole “old, new, borrowed, and blue” thing, well, you’d have them all covered! Old (as in vintage), new (to you), borrowed (provided you have your maid of honor order it for you) and blue.

Check out the mermaid train and the beautiful velvet, pearl, rhinestone and applique detail. Of course, you don’t have to wait for a proposal to find a reason to wear this beauty. When you’re ready to have and hold ’til death do you part, just say “I do!”

It’s a glamorous find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Vintage Martini.

VPOD: And the Bride Wore Green

I’ve always found it interesting that white is the traditional color for wedding gowns. I mean, most women hope to look their absolute best on their special day and yet white is probably the least flattering color choice. Of course, now it’s become trendy to wear green to your wedding. No, not that green! Green as in eco-friendly. And while there are plenty of eco-friendly designers using natural materials in wedding gowns, you will always have a lower carbon footprint if you choose a vintage gown instead. And you won’t have to sacrifice an ounce of style.

Just take a look at today’s VPOD. This 1940s vintage wedding gown of silver and white brocade has a dramatic train that will have guests oohing and aahing all the way down the aisle.

It’s an eco-friendly choice for a vintage fashionista!
