VPOD: Vintage Yves Saint Laurent Cardigan and Skirt

Two hot colors stood out in Oscar gowns this year.

First, we saw a bevy of ladies in the color purple: Mila Kunis in lavender Elie Saab, Natalie Portman in violet Rodarte, Cate Blanchett in pale lilac Givenchy Haute Couture and Scarlett Johansson in plum Dolce & Gabanna.

And then we saw Jennifer Hudson wow everyone with her tangerine Atelier Versace.

Today’s VPOD combines the best of these two color worlds into one fantastic daywear outfit.

Designed by Yves Saint Laurent, this set pairs a longer skirt with a men’s style cardigan but injects plenty of feminine energy with fleur de lis decoration and a tasseled cord belt. It’s the perfect weight for this transitional time between seasons and it’s a fine way to add some color under the remaining gray skies we’ll see in March.

What a delightful purple find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Velvet Pucci Skirt

vintage 1960s velvet Pucci skirt

It’s the time of year when we all start making our lists and checking them twice, right?

Grocery lists for our menu on Turkey Day.

Shoppings lists for holiday gifts that we hope to pick up at sales on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Address lists for all the ladies and gents we plan to send out holiday cards to in the next few weeks.

That leaves little time for thinking about what to wear so it’s nice to have some no-brainer choices lined up ahead of time. In a season where lots can go wrong — from burnt turkeys to delayed shipments, from drips and spills to another unexpected guest who didn’t RSVP — you can at least count on looking fabulous in today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1960s velvet Pucci skirt features a dark color palette just perfect for the season. Go ahead and play with all sorts of combinations to dress it up or down based on your next upcoming social event.

It’s a versatile velvet find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Palm Beach Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Pucci Skirt and Trees That Eat Pollution

Last week a group of plant geneticists and atmospheric scientists announced that genes used by plants can absorb dangerous air pollutants like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) at much higher rates than ever expected.

By traveling to remote rain forests to analyze air samples, they learned that deciduous plants take up 1/3 more of harmful VOCs than previously thought and the scientists are hopeful that understanding these trees’ genes will lead to new ways to help clean the air in cities.

I know that’s a whole of science for a Monday morning but I think it’s easy to let green thoughts slip waaaay down to the bottom of our priority lists instead of keeping them front and center. That’s why I partnered with Trees for the Future to plant ten trees with every Zuburbia purchase and it’s probably why I am increasingly drawn to green colors for my wardrobe.

Take today’s VPOD for instance. This vintage 1960s Pucci silk skirt’s stunning embossed pattern reminds me of leaves and keeps me mindful that my existence on this planet is dependent on the trees they grow on. As Environment Canada reports, two mature trees can provide enough oxygen for a family of four!

So this is a mindful and beautiful find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s YSL Yves Saint Laurent Hand Painted Kimono Jacket and Skirt

vintage YSL yves saint laurent 1970s kimono jacket and skirt set

Some women are more than willing to sacrifice comfort for style. They’ll prance around for hours in their pinching high heels until their toes are numb. They’ll stuff their bodies into their Spanx and force themselves to take shallow breaths for hours on end. They’ll even endure scratchy fabrics with a smile on their faces.

And then there are the rest of us.

Those of us who believe that you can be both stylish AND comfortable.

Who believe that loose can be just as sexy as skin-tight.

Who go craaaaaaazy for a chic and comfy look like today’s VPOD.

This 1970s set from Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche features a hand-painted silk jacket with kimono sleeves and a flowing skirt all done up in fabulous neutrals and muted pinks and purples.

It’s a fabulous set for a comfort-loving vintage fashionista!

Available at Dorothea’s Closet Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage Laura Ashley Southwest Print Skirt

Yesterday my neighbor on the right headed off to the Grand Canyon, and today, my neighbor on the left headed off to Yosemite. These national parks may be owned by the government but they belong to the American people and each year I am thankful that early presidents like Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln had the forethought to set aside these lands and restrict them from most development.

Millions of Americans will spend their 4th of July weekends at national parks this year while millions of others will celebrate in their own backyards. But wherever you are, I hope that you’ll surround yourself with green this holiday. I know, I know, this patriotic holiday is traditionally about red, white and blue but it’s definitely time to add some green to that mix.

There’s lots you can do to be green without detracting from the fun. Can you and a friend carpool to the barbecue? Can you set up a recycling bin next to the trash bin at the cookout? Can you use eco-friendly picnicwear? Can you buy your salad fixings from local farmers instead of big agribusinesses? Can you choose the propane grill over the charcoal grill?

With very little effort you can help make this holiday red, white and green! And you can do it all in style in today’s VPOD.

This vintage skirt by Laura Ashley has a fun southwestern print with red, white and teal that puts an interesting twist to the ol’ red, white and blue. Add a crisp white halter or tee and some strappy sandals and you’ll be the hostess with the most-est.

It’s a fun summer find for a vintage fashionista!

Available from ezearl2 on eBay.

P.S. Best wishes for a safe and happy 4th of July! The VPOD will return on Tuesday, July 6.
