VPOD: Vintage Fendi Peep Toe Heels and Dressing for Halloween

vintage fendi peep toe heels

When I was a little girl, my all-time favorite holiday was Halloween.

I got way more candy than I could ever fit in my Easter basket. And traipsing through neighborhood streets past my bedtime was way more fun than snuggling in bed waiting for Santa.

Plus I got to play dress-up!

Probably my most original costume was the year I went as a cigarette girl. I thought it was clever, but it was way over the head of everyone in my sixth-grade class and my principal at Poplar Street Elementary was not at all pleased. Today I can hardly believe I’m the same gal who made that costume choice!

But while I loved dressing up for Halloween as a kid, I absolutely HATE dressing up for Halloween parties now.

Why?

Because even though I know it’s all for fun, I really don’t want to be anyone but who I am for even one minute. After years of struggling to “find myself,” I have no desire to “try on” any other character—be it a glamorous genie or a hideous zombie.

Let’s face it, whenever we don a costume, of any kind, it reminds us how much clothes inherently change the way we feel about ourselves and the way others perceive us.

The same thing happens when we put on any outfit. Even in our ordinary, everyday lives.

Our STYLE, the way we combine and wear myriad fashion items like clothes, shoes and accessories, expresses who we are and what we’re feeling to the world.

The world perceives this message we’re trying to send, forms an impression of us that we call our IMAGE, and sends it back to us.

I suspect one of the reasons why so many people love Halloween is because it allows you to try-on and express a different aspect of yourself for just one night. And often it’s an aspect that you don’t express to the world everyday.

But you don’t need to limit that aspect to Halloween.

Figure out what it is you’re trying to express on Halloween and then figure out a way to express it in a micro-way in your everyday dress.

Were you attracted to a costume this year that was funny? Naughty? Glamorous? Gross?

Does it possibly represent an aspect of yourself that you’ve been hiding or running from? What would happen if you tried to embrace and express that element more from day-to-day? How can you integrate that quality in your dress?

Maybe you could wear a t-shirt with a funny logo. Or pair your skirt with a sexy pair of patterned tights. Or try-on a pair of distressed or graffiti jeans.

It makes me wonder if one of the reasons so many of us women have so many pairs of shoes is because they’re such a great way to express different elements of ourselves. And we all have so many different elements we need to express.

I mean cowboy boots say something a whole lot different than gladiator sandals. Preppy flats speak a totally different language than today’s VPOD, a pair of super sexy Fendi peep-toe heels.

I particularly love these because they can be paired with a fab little black dress to give a perfect nod to the spirit of Halloween without requiring that I don a costume this year.

Plus they’re great year-round finds for a Vintage Crusader!

VPOD: Vintage 1960s Mod Shoes and The Good Guide

vintage 1960s avante garde shoes

Would you buy a pair of shoes if you knew that the worker who made them had been physically and verbally abused by being forced to stand in the hot sun, by having shoes and other objects thrown at him, or by repeatedly being hit and scratched?

What if you found out this same worker was being paid a mere 50 cents a day, barely enough to provide him food and basic lodging?

This past week an investigation at Nike discovered that two-thirds of their 168 Converse factories failed to meet their contract manufacturing standards and the company confirmed that two plants were subjecting workers to what Nike described as “egregious” physical and verbal abuse.

Now I don’t know about you, but I prefer whenever possible to withhold my spending from companies that allow serious human rights issues like these as well as those companies who test on animals or are notorious environmental polluters.  I much prefer to show support with my own hard-earned dollars to companies that include sustainability among their corporate values and who are leaders in the area of corporate citizenship.

How do you find out who these companies are?

One tool I use is the Good Guide, available online or in app form.

The Good Guide has specialists in life cycle assessment, environmental engineering, chemistry, nutrition and sociology who acquire and compile data to rate companies on their impact to Health, Society and the Environment on a scale of one to ten.

My favorite feature?

The bar code scanner.

When I’m out shopping, I can just scan a bar code with my iPhone and see the product ratings for that item. With over 117,000 products in 639 categories already rated, it’s a handy-dandy tool to help me make more informed choices that align with my values and to choose products that are not only better for my own health and well-being but are better for the planet.

Of course, I don’t need a bar scanner to know that vintage is also a fine green choice or that it can be quite the fashionable choice as well. Just look at today’s VPOD.

This pair of 1960s mod shoes will pack quite a style punch when paired with a plain ol’ shift dress or skirt.

They’re a fun and fab find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Gucci Reptile Sandals and The Wizard of Oz

vintage 1980s gucci reptile sandals

When I was a little girl, I remember waiting with excited anticipation for the yearly broadcast of The Wizard of Oz. (Yes, I predate the days of DVRs, On Demand and DVDs.)

Back then, if you missed the yearly broadcast, you had to wait an entire year before you’d have an opportunity to see the film again. So it will be no problem for me to wait until 2013 to see Disney’s planned 3-D prequel.

With Sam Raimi (Spiderman) directing, the film will be set before the original 1939 film and tell the story of Oz (James Franco) who’s transported to the a foreign land via tornado where he battles three witches played by Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis (the Wicked Witch) and Michelle Williams (Glinda, the Good Witch.)

Since this is a prequel, of course, it means we won’t be seeing our good friend Dorothy, who taught women around the world that a girl can go anywhere as long as she’s wearing a great pair of shoes.

So just imagine where today’s VPOD will take you!

These vintage 1980s Gucci reptile sandals may not be made of rubies but they’re still pretty fabulous.

And they’re a fairy tale find for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Platform Sandals

vintage 1970s platform sandals

According to a new national poll published in April’s ShopSmart magazine, the average woman owns 17 pairs of shoes but typically only wears three pairs on a regular basis.

Plus it reports that we’re now going “sole” searching in cyberspace at a much higher rate than ever before with about a third of women admitting to online purchases.

In addition, more women than ever — 60% in fact — say they’re willing to tolerate painful footwear for the sake of fashion. Can you ever imagine a man saying he’d sacrifice comfort for fashion? No way! Perhaps that’s why 14% of women also admitted to hiding at least one of their shoe purchases from their spouse or significant other.

Of course, until the pharmaceutical industry comes up with a cure to treat “Shoe Shoppingitis” — which you know it eventually will along with some silly drug name like Louboutinia — the only thing standing between you and today’s VPOD will be will power.

And you’ll need quite a bit of it to resist these vintage 1970s new old stock platform sandals which promise to look simply darling with your short shorts.

They’re a hard-to-resist find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Dorothea’s Closet Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1980s Norma Kamali Red Heels

vintage 1980s norma kamali red high heels

Oh, the power of red shoes!

Just think about it. In Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale, red shoes took over the peasant girl and made her dance, dance, dance all morning, noon and night. In The Wizard of Oz, ruby red slippers whisked Dorothy back home to Kansas with just three little clicks. Why there’s no telling what today’s VPOD could help YOU accomplish!

If you’re too shy to dress in the power color red, then at least consider using this commanding shade to dress your feet. Today’s VPOD features a knock-out pair of vintage 1980s heels by Norma Kamali that say, “This woman means business.” Just please, ladies, be sure to use their power for good, not evil.

They’re quite a potent find for a vintage fashionista!
