VPOD: Vintage 1950s Lace Party Dress and Dressing in Nude

“Stand up and pretend you’re a tree…feel your roots sinking 150 feet down into the ground..start swaying in the breeze…”

“Let’s all make the sound of a foghorn together, but make your foghorn sound like it’s coming from far, far, away.”

“Everyone get into your en garde position and aim the tip of your sword right at your partner’s heart.”

This is how I spent my weekend. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

It was just one piece of a fabulous seminar I attended about personal storytelling.

On Saturday morning, I was one of 27 speakers who sat mesmerized while listening to the wisdom and stories of Jean-Louis Rodrigue, one of the foremost instructors of The Alexander Technique and a man who has dedicated his life to studying the movement of people and animals.

He explained how he worked with Leonardo DiCaprio to channel a hawk’s eyes for his role as J. Edgar Hoover in an upcoming film and how he helped Bo Eason incorporate the movement of gorillas into his portrayal of a football player in his Broadway play, Runt of the Litter.

And Jean-Louis pointed out something about animals that really took hold with me.

He said: Animals are authentically themselves all the time. And every animal is beautiful and gorgeous.

How true! How true!

A panther’s not trying to act like another panther and he’s not trying to be a lion. A panther’s just him. A panther.

And I thought: I wonder if it’s easier for animals because they don’t wear clothes.

It’s so easy to hide behind our clothes and use them to massage and manipulate the image of ourselves we want other people to respond to.

If I dress sexy then men will think I’m sexy, we say to ourselves.

If I dress professional then people will know I’m professional, we think.

But here’s the thing:

YOU CAN’T HIDE THE TRUTH OF WHO YOU ARE WITH YOUR CLOTHES!

It never, EVER works. At least not for long.

If you can’t look at your own naked body in a mirror and love every inch of it then there’s no dress on the planet that will make you sexy.

If you don’t put in the hours, deliver results and treat your co-workers with respect then there isn’t a designer suit in the world that will earn you a promotion.

One way to remind yourself of this is to dress in something nude.

And if you feel vulnerable and exposed just thinking about wearing a nude dress, ask yourself why? Is it perhaps because, unlike animals, you’re not yet comfortable in your own skin?

Today’s VPOD, a vintage 1950s lace party dress, plays with nude shades in a very pretty and feminine way.

It’s a lovely find for a Vintage Crusader!

Available at Midnight Mart.

VPOD: Vintage 1930s Lace Evening Gown and Being on the Worst-Dressed List

vintage 1930s lace evening gown

ariel-winter-2011-emmys

I hope you all weren’t hoping that I’d do some Monday morning fashion quarterbacking and list my Best and Worst Dressed at last night’s Emmy Awards.

To be honest, I think creating a Worst Dressed list is just cruel.

No woman spends hours getting ready for one of the most exciting evenings of her life with the intention of seeing herself on a Worst Dressed list the next day (or within minutes in this Age of Twittering).

I’m sure every woman, those who hit the bulls-eye with their style and those who perhaps missed the mark a bit, stepped into their limos believing they looked gorgeous. And I’m sure every one of them felt glamorous as they were being blinded by flashes on the Red Carpet.

Considering that many of these stars probably didn’t select their dresses from among all those available in the Fashion Universe but instead made their selections from a very small edited number of choices delivered by their stylists, perhaps we should all back off from our criticism a bit.

I’m especially saddened to see all the controversy surrounding some of the youngest stars.

For instance, Ariel Winter, the 13-year-old middle daughter on Modern Family, is under attack for a classic lace evening gown that makes her look “too sexy” and that suggests she’s trying to channel Sofia Vergara and Christina Hendricks. Pleeeease!

If any of you have a 13-year-old girl in the house you know there’s no way you could force her to go out in public wearing something she doesn’t want to wear. Even if you disagree with their choices, these young gals are gonna want to wear something they love and that makes them feel beautiful and confident.

And I don’t know about you, but Ariel certainly looks like she feels beautiful and confident to me!

So while I earn a living talking about fashion, I prefer that we talk about it in a way that isn’t mean-spirited and demeaning. We’re all just doing the best we can and with all the conflicting messages sent by the fashion industry, any of us, and that includes the icons of this industry, can make a fashion faux-pas every now and again.

And it’s not the end of the world. Ours or theirs.

So if you like Ariel’s look and you want to channel the style, just grab today’s VPOD.

This vintage 1930s lace evening gown is sized to fit a real woman, not the twigs that inhabit fashion magazines. Like many dresses of this era, there’s a touch of broken netting. But just pin a brooch near this area on the hip and voila! No one will ever notice.

It’s a simple, elegant find for a Best-Dressed Vintage Crusader!

Available at Concetta’s Closet.

VPOD: Vintage 1930s Satin Slip

With The King’s Speech poised to perhaps win this year’s Oscar for Best Picture and HBO’s new hit Boardwalk Empire recognized with both SAG Award and Golden Globe nominations, it’s no surprise that there is revived interest in the days of Prohibition and the years leading up to World War II.

And while many clothes from the 1920s and 1930s can appear too costume-y for everyday wear, the lingerie of this period is simply delightful. The elegant silks, the flowing bias cuts, and the luscious lace combine in creations that that are just as feminine and sexy in the 21st century bedroom as they were in boudoirs shortly after the turn of the 20th century.

Take today’s VPOD for example. This deadstock vintage 1930s bias cut satin slip in dreamy apricot provides current Agent Provocateur style but with a more friendly yesteryear price tag.

It’s a lovely Valentine’s Day treat for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Dollhouse Bettie.

VPOD: Here Comes the Bride – Antique Handmade Lace Wedding Train

Here comes the bride!

A friend of a friend has a daughter who is getting married next Labor Day and the hunt for the wedding dress in on! The budget for the gown? A whopping $5,000!

And since the first day of this shopping adventure coincided with the weekend I spent with my divorced sister, who spent a good portion of our time together picking my ex-CPA brain to help her re-group financially and ensure that she’ll be able to retire someday, well, it got me thinking…

Maybe every bride should consider slashing her wedding gown budget in half and investing the other half in a nice interest-bearing account that compounds daily.

Then, on her 25th wedding anniversary, she can celebrate her years of wedded bliss by buying herself something nice — like a Birkin bag.

But what if her marriage comes to a screeching halt midway to that 25th anniversary, you may ask. Well, then she could turn to her little nest egg to fund a trip to a tropical isle to drown her sorrows (and perhaps meet Husband #2 like that lucky lady who wrote Eat, Pray, Love.)

Of course, another option is simply to think outside the wedding gown box.

For instance, a business colleague recently confessed that his bride-to-be is renting her wedding dress when they marry next June. Sounds like a good idea, don’t you think?

Or, you could combine something old and something new and create your own design by grabbing today’s VPOD and attaching it to a lovely and classic sheath dress.

This antique lace train wedding train was handmade in the early part of the century and features floral Brussels bobbin lace with wide Duchesse lace borders.

It’s an exquisite find for a betrothed vintage fashionista!

Available at Vintage Textile.
