VPOD: Vintage 1970s Roberta di Camerino Outfit

Roberta di Camerino Outfit

I tend to be a deconstructor.  I take outfits and literally separate all the pieces. In my closet, skirts hang with other skirts and blazers hang with other blazers, even if that skirt and blazer were made specifically to be worn together. Separating my clothes this way makes it easier to envision new outfits with the individual pieces.

Of course, another reason I do this is because I tend to dislike a matchy-matchy look. I bristle at someone telling me “These pieces are meant to be worn together.” Except, of course, when they’re right.

And today’s VPOD is a perfect example. This four-piece vintage outfit from 1979 is from Roberta di Camerino. (Heck, the only piece missing to complete the look is a Roberta di Camerino handbag!) All the pieces offer plenty of ways to extend your wardrobe as separates: that super-cute jumper, the fab belt, the leather-trimmed cardigan, the cashmere turtleneck. And while this last piece was added by the owner to match the outfit after a long search and is not by Roberta di Camerino, just think of it as the icing on the cake.

It’s a perfectly styled outfit for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Shimpton Couture.

VPOD: Vintage 1970s Classic Cashmere Coat

Cashmere, that downy layer of hair underneath a goat’s belly, is 1/16th the thickness of a human hair and eight times warmer than wool. Plus it’s super luxurious to the touch and oh-so-comfy to wear.

Of course, choosing vintage cashmere is the responsible option since the demand for new cashmere fashion items is creating devastating effects on the environment. And when you factor in these environmental costs, that new “affordable” cashmere sweater imported from China is not nearly as inexpensive as it seems.

So when possible, the eco-fashionista chooses vintage 100% cashmere like today’s VPOD. This 1970s double-breasted coat in beautiful winter white by Zelinka Matlick for Bonwit Teller is sure to keep you toasty while looking fabulous.

It’s pure cashmere chic for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Posh Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage 1950s Cashmere Chic Sweater

There’s a very fine line between being inspired by someone else’s designs and copying or knocking-off someone else’s work.

For instance, this 1950s vintage cashmere sweater is simply striking with hand-sewn appliques cut from an antique Chinese shawl. It was created by a talented home sewer who was most likely inspired by the work of Helen Bond Caruthers but without the means to purchase one of that designer’s masterpieces. So she took matters into her own hands and created this little beauty all by herself.

So inspiration or knock-off? Since it probably wasn’t created for commercial purposes but rather for personal use, I’m going to say inspiration.

And that makes it a chic cashmere find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Katy Kane Vintage & Couture Clothing.

VPOD: Knit Picker

Cashmere is known as the “diamond fiber” in China and could be this vintage fashionista’s favorite eco-fabric. After all, quality cashmere garments can last forever with little to no pilling. They can be hand-washed requiring no chemical-heavy dry-cleaning. Plus they are about eight times warmer than wool and don’t wrinkle. But…

…China’s increased production of cashmere to meet our needs in the West is having a huge detrimental effect on its land, air and water. Not to mention the deplorable conditions for the darling goats who offer up their fur for your toasty cardigan sweater.

As with so many fashion choices, choosing vintage cashmere not only benefits our environment but can offer a one-of-a-kind look that differentiates from the thousands of ho-hum cashmere sweaters sold by big-box retailers every year.

Consider today’s VPOD. This charming 1960s vintage cashmere sweater by Pringle would look smashing for the office with a skinny little belt, a white shirt, a pencil skirt and heels. But it’s also a fun little weekend find with a tank, a scarf, jeans and flats.

It’s an eco-conscious choice for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Posh Vintage.
