VPOD: Vintage 1970s Velvet Blazer, Friendsgiving and Being Thankful

vintage 1970s velvet feather print blazer

My daughter is invited to a Friendsgiving dinner this weekend. It’s a get-together celebrated annually with her friends in Chicago before they all journey to various corners of the United States to spend the actual Thanksgiving holiday with their families.

Now, since I’m a vegetarian, the conventional menu for Thanksgiving doesn’t appeal to my taste buds. But I’m not too fond of the idea of taking one day a year to give thanks either.

After all, isn’t that something we should be doing all the time?

In 2001, the year I began journaling for real, I listed four things I was grateful for every day. Here ‘s just a few of the things I was thankful for that year:

** waking up without an alarm
** the stranger who tracked me down in the grocery store to tell me my headlights were on
** growing up in America where I was taught to read and got a free education
** my Mom’s cooking
** a parking spot opening up right when I needed it
** a bill that was lower than I expected it to be
** purple tulips
** a great waitress
** people who return phone calls
** suitcases with wheels
** a flat tire in front of my house instead of on the road
** a safe journey home
** the library
** a pep talk from a friend
** ripe pears
** every man and woman in the US military
** a compliment from a stranger
** an uninterrupted conversation with my sister
** windshield wipers

It was a marvelous journaling exercise and a true reminder that every day can be a day of thanksgiving.

Which reminds me to let all of you know how grateful I am for your daily support and your kind emails. Zuburbia couldn’t exist without each and every one of you!

And, as you plan your own Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving festivities this year, including selecting the perfect outfit, perhaps you’ll find today’s VPOD to be a fine option.

This vintage 1970s velvet blazer has a subtle turkey feather print that gives a nod to the history of the holiday without being too literal.

It’s a fabulous Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving find for a Vintage Crusader!

Available at Posh Vintage.

VPOD: Vintage Ralph Lauren Blazer and The Power in a Name

vintage ralph laurent blazer

I’ve got a HUGE confession to make to all of you…

I’m not who you think I am!

That’s right.

I exist as Mary Kincaid only because of a legal document in some courthouse in Ohio. You see, almost a decade ago I decided to change my name.

Not because I have any felonies under my old moniker. And not because I’m trying to hide from anyone.

It was strictly a branding decision.

I had come to a fork in the road and planned to follow the path that led to more speaking and writing opportunities.

Since I didn’t want any future success to be stamped with my ex-husband’s name, and I had yet to meet anyone who could correctly pronounce, yet alone spell, my maiden name, I paid a small fee and completed a wee bit of paperwork, and I was reborn as…

…Mary Kincaid!

And it’s funny how much more instantly ME I felt. Like putting on a dress that fit like a glove.

I imagine this is how the designer of today’s VPOD must have felt, too.

This bright vintage blazer was designed by Ralph Lipshitz. You know him better, of course, as Ralph Lauren. And be honest.

Aren’t you more inclined to embrace this blazer’s bright summer style when you see the name Ralph Lauren, not Ralph Lipshitz, on the label?

Uh-huh.

Just like you covet Halston or follow the shenanigans of Rachel Zoe more enthusiastically because they’re no longer Roy Frowick and Rachel Rosenzweig.

So while I don’t approve of name-calling, I’m perfectly fine with name-changing.

It’s just one more style tool for a vintage fashionista!

VPOD: Vintage Ungaro Blazer and Wearing Your Heart on Your Sleeve

Vintage Ungaro Silk Jacket

Emotions are powerful, right?

I mean they affect both your thinking and your actions.

And scientists have proven that negative emotions, like fear, anxiety, and anger are actually releasing different chemicals in your body than the happier emotions of love, contentment and acceptance. So it’s no surprise that there is increasing evidence that repressing powerful negative emotions can eventually lead to a whole host of health problems.

Which means it’s more important than ever to “wear your heart on your sleeve.”

Shakespeare’s Othello first coined this expression in 1604 and it’s since become part of our lexicon to describe the importance of expressing emotions openly and freely.

And to refresh our skill at wearing our heart on our sleeve we just have to observe young children.

Ever notice how they’re already experts at this?

You don’t have to guess what they’re feeling in any moment because they make it very clear when they’re angry, frustrated, delighted or sad. Stomping feet, giggles, tears…they haven’t yet learned to suppress their feelings and shut down their honest reactions to people and events.

Of course, giggling uncontrollably at a board meeting or breaking into tears over lunch with your boss probably won’t put you on the partner track in today’s business environment. But that doesn’t mean it’s healthy to seethe for years over a lossed promotion or mope around for a decade over a love gone wrong.

If you need a little extra help getting in touch with your repressed emotions and channeling them in a healthy way into your world, you can try yoga, journaling, boxing, a good therapist…whatever works for you. As Nike says, just do it.

And to celebrate your new-found commitment to looking inward and doing The Work (which Byron Katie calls her method), treat yourself to today’s VPOD.

This vintage silk blazer by Ungaro has glimmering hearts galore–not just on its sleeve.

And it’s a fine find for an emotional vintage fashionista!
