The fashion world was stunned yesterday at the news of Alexander McQueen’s suicide at the age of 40. This talented designer cut his own path through the fashion jungle and kept the fashion world on its toes with his often controversial presentations. We grew up with him, literally, as he left school at only 16 to pursue his path. He will be missed and we send our sympathies to his family and friends.
Today’s VPOD features a vintage Alexander McQueen denim jacket in his honor. And it’s anything but ordinary! Embroidered silver stars, amazing zippered 3/4 sleeves, red thread detail and cut-outs on the arms and where you would expect there to be pockets.

It’s Earth Day 2008–a worldwide celebration to raise awareness of the severe environmental challenges that are facing our planet. For example, consider for a moment that, according to the EPA, four million tons of textiles are sent to landfills each year. Four million tons!
Now as vintage fashionistas, of course, we’re already doing our own small part to alleviate this particular problem, but there’s always something more we can do, right? Maybe it’s time to check out that consignment shop on your way home. Or to make sure you keep some paper shopping bags in your car for your next department store visit. Or to find a tailor and re-fashion a dress you were going to trash. Being green and being chic are not mutually exclusive.
Just look at today’s VPOD. This camouflage net evening dress by Alexander McQueen is super stylish and could have been inspired by Mother Nature herself. And while it may not be made out of organic materials, its “carbon footprint” will still be significantly less than that of a brand new garment manufactured this year.
