VPOD: Vintage 1950s Nifty Nehru Coat

In 1964, India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was shown in Vogue magazine wearing his traditional single-breasted coat with a stand-up collar and no lapels. It became known as the Nehru jacket. Shortly thereafter, the Beatles traveled to India and soon were seen in Nehru jackets themselves. So you can imagine what happened. A trend was born that swept up everyone from Johnny Carson to Joe Namath.

But these nifty jackets aren’t just for the male species. Today’s VPOD features a 1950s version for the female fashionista from Saks Fifth Avenue. Heavy wool mixes with gold lurex for sparkling evening drama but there’s no reason not to dress it down for a little daytime drama as well.

And that makes it a nifty nehru find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Chi Chi and the Greek.
