We should all give a hoot about owls because they play a very important role in the environment. These predators are masters at controlling small animal populations. In fact, barn owls can search over 100 acres a night looking for food and just one barn owl can consume 25,000 mice per year! So it’s easy to understand why declining barn owl populations in the 1980s caused such concern, resulting in several species being labeled endangered.
Surely a creature this unique and beneficial needs to be protected. Did you know that an owl’s ears are asymmetrical? One is higher than the other which helps contribute to an owl’s superior hearing ability. And who hasn’t been amazed (and perhaps a bit freaked out!) by an owl’s ability to rotate its head 270 degrees?
Of course, since owls have been found in cave paintings in France that date back over 15,000 years, it’s no surprise that owls pop up in legends and folklore. What’s interesting is that, depending on the culture, they can represent either misfortune and death, or prosperity and wisdom.
Surely the owls depicted in today’s VPOD, however, are some of the good guys. Three of them peer out from this fab vintage pendant necklace by Joseff of Hollywood and I’m sure you’ll want to name each one!
It’s a find worth hooting about if you’re a vintage fashionista!
