VPOD: Vintage 1960s Balenciaga Cocktail Dress

Vintage Balenciaga Strapless Organza Cocktail Dress

A longtime client of Balenciaga said after his death:

“Women did not have to be perfect or even beautiful to wear his clothes. His clothes made them beautiful.”

What a lovely tribute to a man born in a small fishing village in Spain in 1895 who went on to become one of the most celebrated and important designers of the 20th century. Inspired at a young age by his mother, who worked as a seamstress, Balenciaga would later honor her by naming his three Spanish boutiques in San Sebastian, Barcelona and Madrid, Eisa, after her.

Today’s VPOD is a stunning vintage 1960s Balenciaga cocktail dress that once hung in Eisa. Since it’s a Balenciaga construction, yes, you can expect to find a hidden boned corset from the waist to the bust. But the muted golden brown and black leaf print is slightly unexpected for evening. And while the decision to wear something this beautiful is simple, the choice to wrap the attached scarf around one’s neck or allow it to trail behind could cause some consternation.

Either way, it’s a stunning find for a vintage fashionista!

Available at Atelier-Mayer.

So pretty! This dress would be a dream to wear. I can only imagine the superb construction details.
