It’s the first week of school for many students and that got me thinking about some of my old teachers.

Mr. Tarone, if you’re out there, just let me say that while I remember very little of your 7th grade geometry class, I do remember that each of the circles in today’s VPOD has a diameter that is twice its radius and that I can find that diameter by dividing the circumference of each ring by pi.

And while I can honestly say I never needed to calculate the circumference of a circle outside of your class, all the proofs that I toiled over in your homework assignments did somehow instill a love and appreciation for shape, symmetry and order that has served me quite well over here in the fashion world.

Perhaps that’s why I’m mesmerized by this vintage 1960s necklace by Christian Dior. It’s a geometric marvel with its circles, spheres and perpendicular lines.

And it’s a very chic find for a vintage fashionista!

In my pre-vegetarian life as a young girl, I remember running to greet my father when he’d come home from a morning fishing trip to the Nescopeck creek, eager to count the number of Rainbow trout in his fishing basket. Today my father’s retired and has plenty of time to enjoy his pasttime but only if he throws his catch back into the water.  Contaminant levels in that same creek have begun too high and eating fish caught in it could post health risks to him and my mother.

Of course, most people don’t catch their own fish for dinner. Instead, they rely on their local supermarkets to provide safe fresh-water fish and seafood and, fortunately, there is a growing trend among US retailers to to provide safer, more sustainable seafood options to their customers.

If you want to know how your supermarket stacks up on the Greenpeace Seafood Sustainability Scorecard, stop by Greenpeace’s online supermarket lookup. Then support those merchants who are working to provide sustainable seafood options (like Target, Whole Foods, and Wegmans) and just say no to those retailers who aren’t taking any responsibility for the seafood they sell or the damage they are doing to the oceans (like Costco, Meijer, Publix and Winn Dixie).

Of course, you can always choose to forego fish on your plate entirely and put them on your ears instead. Today’s VPOD features a pair of lovely shoulder duster earrings by Givenchy that are loooong on eco-style.

They score an A+ on a fashion scorecard for a vintage fashionista!

For centuries, poison rings have been used to conceal lethal substances. Famous deaths attributed to poison rings include the ancient Greek orator Demosthenes and the Carthaginian general Hannibal while tales abound of Cesare Borgia, a famous nobleman during the Renaissance, wearing a poison ring that he used to help bring down political rivals. It’s all very James Bond, don’t you think?

And it only took a few centuries for American capitalism to spy an opportunity. Several companies now offer poison rings that are specially designed to hold Viagra and Cialis pills. But don’t let that stop you from grabbing one of these ingenious little gems for yourself.

Today’s VPOD, for instance, is a very feminine vintage poison pill by Emmons. And although I strongly recommend NOT using this ring to store poison, it could come in quite handy to hold a pill, lip balm or solid perfume.

It’s an inexpensive conversation starter for a vintage fashionista!

My sister is visiting this week and yesterday we ventured to the Getty Center where we marveled at the artistry and workmanship of the 18th century pieces in the Decorative Arts collection.

Perhaps that’s why this morning I felt so drawn to today’s VPOD, which also displays amazing craftsmanship.

This vintage pendant necklace of ivory beads has its large ivory piece enhanced with scrimshaw, or etching, in five beautiful patterns.

Of course, one must always be cautious when purchasing vintage ivory and seek out reputable dealers. It’s important to note that today’s VPOD is constructed of pre-ban elephant ivory. Since elephants are on the CITES list but are not on the Federal Endangered Species List,  it is illegal to export elephant ivory but perfectly legal to purchase elephant ivory that was imported into the US before the CITES ban in 1989.

Now I certainly wish that we humans were never so greedy that we would dare harm a magnificent creature like an elephant and am appalled by the illegal poaching that continues today. However, I do believe that vintage pieces like today’s VPOD deserve to be preserved by individuals who will use them to champion the importance of conservation, who will speak out against the killing of all animals for fashion’s sake and who will honor the individual elephant who unwillingly gave its tusks for this piece rather than allow the piece to be recklessly lost to time.

So this is a beautiful yet controversial find for a vintage fashionista.

It’s easy to sit around and kvetch about the Gulf Oil Spill Disaster. It’s easy to feel outrage. It’s easy to criticize what is or is not being done to take care of the problem. But have you asked yourself what you’re doing to help or hurt the situation?

We’re deep drilling offshore to supply our oil habit, so to quote John Stewart: Are you using an SUV “to tow a boat you don’t have up a mountain you don’t live near?”

Or have you considered that, according to Maggie Koerth-Baker’s calculations on BoingBoing, we could completely eliminate our need for offshore oil by simply reducing our national daily gasoline consumption by 9%. (Which works out to oh….about 4.2 miles a day—as simple as planning your weekly errands a bit more wisely.)

Or have you considered prying yourself away from the internet for five minutes to write a letter, draft an email or call your congressperson to convey your outrage and concern to someone who is in a position to actually affect this country’s oil policy as we move forward and react to this tragic event? I’m just saying that actions speak louder than words and that I for one want my grandchildren to be able to enjoy seeing starfish and seahorses in their natural habitat and not just as the charms on today’s VPOD.

This multi-strand vintage necklace by Miriam Haskell is oh-so-lovely with its turquoise cabachons, pearls and danglers.

It’s a beautiful find (and a reminder to take action) for a vintage fashionista!
