According to ISEC, the International Society for Endangered Cats, the Amur Leopard is the most critically endangered wild cat whose numbers are known. Now take a guess how many of these beautiful creatures remain in the wild today. Go ahead, guess.

Not 5,000.

Not 500.

Not even 50!

In 2007, which are the last census figures stated, only somewhere between 25 and 34 of these spotted cats were still roaming their natural habitat in a small area south of the Far East-Primorskii region of Russia.

Does anyone else find it alarming and disturbing that while we women are clamoring for the faux leopard-prints that are so trendy for fall, a few dozen Amur leopards are literally hanging on for dear life, facing extinction of their species?

While I’m not suggesting that anyone should necessarily shun wearing a gorgeous leopard print like the one adorning today’s VPOD on a pair of 1990s Todd Oldham boots, I would like to suggest that when we don our leopard-print scarves and dresses and skirts this fall that we remember (and perhaps support) ongoing conservation efforts by organizations like ISEC to keep all endangered wild cats alive and well.

That’s how you become an eco-conscious vintage fashionista!

I’ve been talking to a lot of women lately to get feedback for a style workshop I’m putting together, and one thing I’ve noticed is that while many women admit to a lopsided closet—you know, one where 20% of the clothes get worn 80% of the time—women often don’t spend their wardrobe budget accordingly.

Now it seems to me that if you’re going to wear these items over here the majority of the time, then you should probably allocate most of your wardrobe budget to them and purchase the very highest quality with your fashion dollar.

But instead, what often seems to happen, is a gal will splurge two months of her fashion budget on a pair of killer heels that she’s only going to wear once a year with a fancy dress while the classic pumps she wears to the office three days a week are sadly in need of a facelift.

Or she’ll make an impulsive purchase on a not-so-inexpensive item from a trendy store that ends up splitting its seams, losing its buttons and pilling in a month or two when, for just a few dollars more, she could have scored an authentic vintage version of the style that she’d still be wearing with glee years later.

Today’s VPOD is a fine example of what I’m talking about. I saw a similar-styled blazer of substantially lower quality at a national retailer recently with a price tag just a few dollars less than the one on this fabulous, high-quality 1990s designer wool blazer by Yves Saint Laurent.

And I call this kind of choice a fashion no-brainer for a vintage fashionista!

Both a house and a wardrobe need to be built on a solid foundation. In your closet, the concrete and cement that hold up a house translate into pieces that pass the test of time and hang around through fad after fad. You know which ones I mean. Your timeless little black dress. The skirt that works with just about anything. The wool coat that fits you like a glove.

And while wardrobe consultants and stylists will often advise that you build your wardrobe on these kind of classic separates and satisfy your urge for trends with accessories, it’s wise to have a few classic, foundational accessories at hand, too.

And today’s VPOD qualifies as one of those long-term keepers. These 1990s suede platform heels by Chanel are worth every hard-earned penny and can raise the class quotient on anything you pair them with.
